Smartphone Apps Every Driver Should Have

It seems there’s an app for everything these days, right? Well, driving is no exception. Whatever your biggest headache is when you hit the road, there’s likely a smartphone app available to you to address the issue without much trouble. Whether you need directions, roadside assistance or help finding your car, look no further than your smartphone to deliver your desired result.

Here is a sampling of smartphone apps drivers should always have on hand.

If you need directions

Waze

There are a lot of GPS apps to choose from, but Waze does more than give turn-by-turn directions. The mobile app also helps drivers get to where they’re going faster by offering the best (less crowded) route. Waze uses a community of fellow drivers, map editors and beta testers to provide users with real-time, live navigation. It suggests when to leave your current location to reach your destination by your desired time and lets you alert friends and family of your ETA.

If you need to find a parking space

You need a place to park once you’ve found your destination, which is easier said than done sometimes. The Parkopedia app helps drivers find parking closest to their destination, how much it will cost to park there and if there is space is available. You no longer have to drive aimlessly around hoping to find a spot. Parkopedia’s additional features include pre-booking so you can reserve a space online through the app, real-time parking availability and the ability to pay for parking online or through the app.

To keep your eyes on the road

Vehicle-Cell Phone pairing technology

Your mobile phone makes it easy to get distracted while driving between text message and email notifications and phone calls. We all like to think we’ll ignore the phone when it buzzes, rings or dings, but sometimes the temptation to see who’s contacting us—or the need to feel like we have to respond right away—can be too great.

A number of manufacturers are equipping their vehicles with technology that allows you to pair your phone with your car through Bluetooth so you can make and answer calls hands-free. For example, Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, FIAT and Ram vehicle owners can use the Uconnect platform to make and receive calls as well as send and reply to text messages without taking their hands off of their steering wheel—or their eyes off of the road.

If your vehicle isn’t Bluetooth equipped, there are other options to help you stay off of your phone while driving. Most smartphones have a “Do not disturb” setting that will mute all calls and alerts until you turn if off again. You can also allow exceptions to get through if you’re waiting for an important call.

If your electric vehicle needs a charge

Plugshare

There are plenty of apps to help drivers find the nearest gas station, but not everyone needs a fill up these days anymore. If you need to plug in your vehicle instead, the Plugshare app provides information on more than 300,000 charging areas from every network around the world. Plugshare users can also get station ratings and availability in real time.

When you need roadside assistance—and more

GEICO Mobile

The award-winning GEICO Mobile app can help solve some of the driving headaches that the aforementioned apps cannot. You can request roadside assistance if you have a flat tire, run out of gas, need a tow or lock your keys in your car. GEICO Emergency Roadside Service is available and you’ll be able to report your issue in just a few minutes. You can also use GEICO Mobile to find the closest and least expensive gas station, store your digital insurance ID cards and file a claim.

The “GEICO Explore” feature can even help you remember where you parked your vehicle. Meanwhile, GEICO’s Virtual Assistant is available to answer any questions about your policy.

The group stage of Qatar 2022 has only just ended and FIFA is already organizing the next FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by three nations for the first time in its existence, Canada, the United States and the Mexico. The tournament, which is still three and a half years away, will have an increment of play, the reason is supposed to put on a bigger show and obviously generate several million more.

To that end, the world’s largest football organization plans to change the format of the tournament to have a total of 104 matches throughout the competition.

32 teams in the knockout stage

According to The Guardian, FIFA will change their initial idea of having 16 groups of three teams each, for a very long group stage of 12 sectors with four teams each, to a round of 32 teams to start the knockout phase. .

104 games in total
With this change, the 2026 World Cup would have a total of 104 matches, 40 more than those scheduled for Qatar 2022, including the group stage and the qualifiers.

The idea of FIFA is that in case of victory the winner gets three points and a penalty shootout winner, after a draw in regular time, gets two points, while the penalty shootout loser gets one a.

How many places will each Confederation have in North America in 2026?

HEALTH HAZARDS

HEALTH HAZARDS: An ineffective sewerage system is the main cause of unhygienic conditions in Karachi. While the whole city is struggling on this count, some areas are struggling more than the rest. Mehmoodabad is one such area where people are forced to live under such conditions. The area is littered with garbage, and overflowing sewers leave the lanes filled with sludge, making life unbearable with stink in the air. Does anyone care about this?

ROAD ACCIDENTS: Balochistan has no dearth of issues affecting the life of the common man one way or the other. While there is precious little that may be done in the case of several of such issues, but the number of fatal road traffic accidents (RTAs) across the province can surely be controlled. Most of the important highways and roads do not have safety barriers installed that may guide or stop an out-of-control vehicle. The National Highway Authority (NHA) must wake up before more lives are lost on Balochistan’s killer roads.

ATTACK ON EDUCATION: Girls in Pakistan have struggled for years to acquire the right to education. Recently, a girls’ school in Diamer district of Gilgit-Baltistan was burnt down by miscreants. It is not the first such incident. Unfortunately, girls have been deprived of their fundamental right to education due to various reasons. It is time for society at large to take a firm stand in this regard and promote girls’ education.

MUGGERS ON THE LOOSE: The spike in street crimes in Karachi has triggered a sense of insecurity among the general public. One of our neighbours was shot by muggers after he offered some resistance to them in Gulistan-i-Jauhar. This tragic incident has raised concerns over the worsening law and order situation in the city and has left us completely traumatised. The government should pay attention to the matter, and the police force should definitely improve its performance.

GOP wins control of New Hampshire House, 1 race unsettled

CONCORD, New Hampshire (AP) — The New Hampshire House of Representatives will have an overwhelming Republican majority next week, with one of 400 seats remaining undecided after the recount devolved into a disputed tie.

Election night results showed Republicans leading 203 to 197, but the State Electoral Law Commission confirmed on Monday the results of a recount that saw Democratic incumbent Eamon Kelly take the Berlin seat. The committee also had to hear an appeal over a stalled election in Rochester and a controversy in Manchester that ended in court, but the candidate dismissed the appeal. This leaves us with a breakdown of 201-198 and one race remains when MPs take office on December 7th.

In the Rochester election, Republican David Walker defeated incumbent Democrat Chuck Grassi by a single vote, but the score ended in a 970–970 tie. Both filed an appeal but decided to take the case to the legislature, the candidates said on Monday. You can vote for yourself and choose a winner, let the candidates split the seats with half the votes each, or return the issue to the community for a special election.

Grassi and Walker both said they were campaigning during the holidays, which means they probably won’t sit until the end of January, but opted for the latter.

Both Grassi and Walker said they would prefer the latter, even if it meant campaigning over the holidays and probably not sitting out until the end of January. Grassi and Walker said they would prefer the latter, even if it means campaigning over the holidays and probably not before the end of January.

Also on Monday, the committee instructed the secretary of state to count 27 absentee ballots that were accidentally shelved in Brentwood. The new tally boosted Democratic candidate Eric Tourer’s chances of winning.

Dick Chamberlain, who has been the city’s moderator for more than 40 years, said he made a mistake by suspending absentee ballot processing to help older women at the polling station. Her willingness to take charge earned her praise from Commissioner Cathy Sullivan.

“I think you have an excellent track record, so I hope you continue to do what you are doing,” he said. “If this is the first mistake in years, congratulations.”

What to expect as Qatar face the Netherlands

Qatar will be playing their third and final game of the World Cup, taking on the mighty Netherlands at Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor at 6pm (15:00 GMT).

Netherlands enters the game at the top of Group A, but a defeat by Qatar could change that.

Qatar, meanwhile, will try to avoid being the first host country in World Cup history to not win a single game during the group stage.

Match preview: Netherlands vs Qatar

Coach Page disappointed about Wales performance so far

Wales manager Robert Page spoke to reporters at the news conference ahead of the match against England.

“We’ve worked so hard to get into this position,” Page said.

“My frustration and disappointment for players is that we’ve shown nowhere near levels of performance of what got us to this World Cup and that’s what really disappoints me.”

In the last two group games, Wales draw with the USA, and lost to Iran in their first World Cup since 1958.

What’s at stake in today’s games?

While Ecuador v Senegal and Iran v USA will be fighting for tournament survival, a Qatar victory could endanger the Netherlands’ prospect of finishing at the top of their group.

Qatar, meanwhile, will be fighting not to become the only host team in World Cup history to go winless in the group stage.

Wales will be trying to block England’s easy entrance into the knockout phase, something they can only achieve with a four-goal victory.

Iran vs USA: Why is it hard to focus on just the football?

At Iran vs the USA today, there’s tournament survival at stake.

But for the majority of the millions tuning in across Iran, it will be difficult to focus on just the football, Al Jazeera’s Maziar Motamedi reports from Tehran.

Amid continuing protests in the country, the reason is not just the sour political relations between the two countries.

What’s behind the Wales vs England rivalry?

Asked to explain the centuries-long rivalry between England and Wales, England manager Gareth Southgate said it’s simple: Proximity.

“Well, basically, they are here and we are right there,” he said on Monday, gesturing with his hands to represent neighbours England and Wales. “There’s not a lot more that I can say than that. It’s like any two countries whose borders are next to each other.”

“For me, a great sporting rivalry. No more than that. That feeling might not be mutual. I can understand that as well,” he added.

England’s King Edward invaded and colonised Wales in 1282. The country, like England is now part of the United Kingdom, has seen centuries of uprisings, rebellions and more recently political movements for independence, since.

World Cup 2022: Ecuador vs Senegal match preview

Ecuador coach Gustavo Alfaro has called on his players to deliver the “best World Cup” in the country’s history as they chase qualification for the knockout phase against Senegal on Tuesday.

The South American side will seal their place in the last 16 if they manage to avoid defeat against the African champions in the final round of Group A fixtures after beating Qatar 2-0 in the tournament’s opening match and outplaying the Dutch on Friday in a 1-1 draw.

Progression out of the group would match Ecuador’s all-time best World Cup showing in 2006, when they made it to the knockout phase for the first time ever before exiting to England.

“I’m convinced we’ve done everything we can, we’ve done our homework, hopefully tomorrow we will be strong and fortunate enough against Senegal, who are a great team, and hopefully we will go through, because we deserve it,” Alfaro told reporters on Monday.

Alfaro said his team should expect their toughest game yet against Senegal, who are ranked 26 places above them.

“We respect the pecking order, but we don’t need to be fearful. We remain calm but that doesn’t mean we are overconfident, we are not triumphalist,” he said.

“We have our own way of playing, we are not just thinking of getting a draw. We have to come to the pitch trying to win the game … We are creating our own pathway. We want to progress, we want to seal our passage, we want to play the best World Cup in Ecuadorean history.”

However, one area of concern for the South Americans is the fitness of captain Enner Valencia after he was carried off late in the Netherlands draw with a recurrence of a knee strain. The 33-year-old forward has scored all three of Ecuador’s goals in Qatar, adding to the three he bagged in Brazil in 2014.

African champions ‘dealing with the pressure’

Senegal, for their part, will almost certainly need to beat Ecuador at the Khalifa International Stadium to qualify for the last 16.

Coach Aliou Cisse’s side lost 2-0 to the Dutch before beating Qatar 3-1 on Friday to keep their hopes of advancing alive.

They could theoretically remain in contention for the knockout phase with a draw, but that outcome would be contingent on hosts Qatar registering a highly unlikely victory over the Netherlands, who sit joint-top of Group A with Ecuador.

Cisse said on Monday that his side is expected to qualify from the group due to their status as the best side in Africa, but added his players were adapting to the pressure well.

Having reached the quarter-finals on their World Cup debut in 2002, Senegal were eliminated in the group stage on fair play points four years ago in Russia.

“I come from a country where we don’t like losing … we’re always hungry for that win [and] not going to the round of 16 would be difficult to digest,” Cisse told reporters. “We’re okay, we’re dealing with the pressure and stress. For me, it’s good stress.”

WHO recommends new name for monkeypox disease

Following a series of consultations with global experts, WHO will begin using the new preferred term “mpox” as a synonym for monkeypox. Both names would be used simultaneously for a year until “monkey pox” was eradicated.

Since the monkeypox outbreak escalated earlier this year, racist and stigmatizing language has been observed and reported to WHO on the Internet, in other settings and in some communities. At the conference, various people and countries expressed their concerns and asked WHO to suggest ways to change the name.

The naming of new and, exceptionally, existing diseases is the responsibility of WHO through a consultative process involving WHO Member States in accordance with the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and the WHO family of international health-related classifications.

Following the process of updating the ICD, WHO held consultations to obtain input from a number of experts, as well as countries and the general public, who were invited to submit proposals for new names. Based on these additional consultations and discussions with WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhan Ghebreyesus, WHO recommends:

The adoption of a new English synonym for this disease, mpox.
Smallpox would become the preferred term, replacing monkeypox after a year-long transition period. This will help allay experts’ concerns about the confusion caused by the name change during the pandemic.
The synonym mpox will be included in the online ICD-10 in the coming days. It will be part of the official release of ICD-11 in 2023, the current global standard for medical data, clinical documentation and statistical data collection.
The term “monkey pox” continues to be used as an ICD search term to match historical data.
Recommendation considerations include rationale, scientific validity, current range of use, pronunciation, ease of use across languages, lack of geographic or zoological references, and historical science, including ease of retrieval of information.

As a rule, the process of updating the ICD can take several years. In this case, we follow standard procedures, but the process was processed quickly.

During the consultative process, the views of various advisory bodies were heard, including experts from the Medical-Scientific and Classification-Statistical Advisory Committees, consisting of representatives of government bodies from 45 countries.

The issue of using the new name in different languages was discussed in detail. The preferred term mpox can be used in other languages as well. Any additional naming problems that arise are resolved using the same mechanism. Translations are usually discussed in official collaboration with relevant government agencies and relevant scientific organizations.

The WHO has adopted the term mpox in its communications and encourages others to follow these guidelines to minimize the ongoing adverse effects of the current and new names.
