6 Ways You Can Support Local Businesses

Many consumers are interested in supporting local businesses in their communities. With e-commerce and the internet, you can also support businesses that are local to other communities. Whether you want to support local businesses as a consumer or as a fellow business owner, you have a variety of options. Here are six ways you can support local businesses.

1. Provide Genuine Feedback

One of the best ways you can support local businesses is by leaving a review. Small and local businesses often have smaller marketing and search engine optimization budgets than larger companies and corporations, so reviews and testimonials from previous or current customers can help them gain visibility online. The more reviews available, the more traffic the business is likely to receive. While you should try to leave positive reviews and resolve any negative experiences in private, be as genuine as possible in your review.

2. Work With Minority-Owned Businesses

Many small and local businesses are owned and operated by minorities. If you want to support local businesses as either a consumer or fellow business owner, seeking out minority-owned businesses is an excellent option. For example, you can look for a woman-owned contractor. As a consumer, you can prioritize purchasing products or services you’re looking for from minority-owned businesses. As a business owner, you can develop business partnerships with them or coordinate participation in promotions or local events.

3. Shop Local

If you know about small businesses operating in your area or online, try to shop there instead of at major corporations or franchises. Shopping local can provide these businesses with the cash flows they need to remain operational. When local small businesses remain open, they help the local economy grow or remain stable. Your purchases will help local or independent artists, craftsmen, and contractors. By frequenting local shops and restaurants, you’re also likely to support a strong social community for yourself and others who live in your area.

4. Find Ways To Include Them in Your Supply Chain

As a business owner, you can support local businesses by partnering with them, but it’s not your only option. You can also order and purchase supplies from them, much like a consumer would. If you need equipment or inventory for your business, such as office supplies or recipe ingredients, look for a local company that provides those things. If your business works with vendors and suppliers, be sure to include local small businesses in your supply chain.

5. Look for Them Online

Searching for local businesses online is one of the simplest ways of finding small businesses to patronize. If you’re not interested in browsing various stores or restaurants, you can instead search for the specific products, services, or cuisines you want. Make sure you specify in your search that you’re looking for local businesses. You can do this by searching on a mobile or online map or by including the key phrase “near me” in your search.

6. Buy Gift Cards

Another simple support option is to buy a small business’s gift cards or gift certificates. You can make these purchases whenever you want, which helps boost a small business’s cash flow right away while providing you with a good gift to give someone or use later yourself. Most restaurants offer gift cards, but you may need to ask whether other types of small businesses offer them.

These and other methods allow you to support small businesses operating in your area. Consider how you want to support businesses and what types of businesses you’re most interested in supporting. This can help you determine the best strategies to provide your support.
