Gucci joins Ellen MacArthur Foundation as a strategic partner

Gucci joins Ellen MacArthur Foundation as a strategic partner

Italian fashion house Gucci has announced a new strategic partnership with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation to accelerate its vision of a circular economy and regenerative agriculture for the future.

Ellen MacArthur Foundation is a charity committed to creating a circular economy that delivers better outcomes for people and the environment and Gucci’s partnership with “further strengthen our commitments to circularity and regenerative agriculture,” said president and chief executive officer Marco Bizzarri in a statement.

The partnership will build on the fashion house’s existing circular economy strategy underlined by the three key principles to eliminate waste and pollution, circulate products and materials, and regenerate nature while expanding the company’s ongoing sustainable initiatives.

“For us, purpose and progress are paramount to the very ethos of Gucci,” added Bizzarri. “We are constantly experimenting and evolving to drive positive impacts in the Gucci community, and in the wider world.”

Gucci to accelerate circular economy and regenerative agriculture

The foundation said that it will support Gucci to “further scale and embed the principles of the circular economy”. The initial collaborative phase efforts include the Italian fashion house’s increasing its collections with circular principles across its products’ life cycle by innovating on products that are “used more, made to be made again, and made from safe and recycled or renewable inputs”.

Ellen MacArthur Foundation added that it will also analyse Gucci’s efforts to help pinpoint areas where circularity can be embedded in the design and inspire creation. It will also provide educational resources and courses to “deepen knowledge and operational know-how of circular economy principles and practices”.

Another key initiative will be to advance regenerative agriculture by providing Gucci with insights to inform and enable the brand to champion and source regeneratively. This builds on Gucci’s investment in regenerative projects that began in 2020, under its Natural Climate Solutions Portfolio, across key raw materials.

Andrew Morlet, chief executive at the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, added: “We are thrilled to be partnering with Gucci to redesign the future of fashion. Through Gucci’s passion for people and the planet, and the Foundation’s circular economy expertise, we can innovate towards industry-led solutions for fashion designed to be used more, made to be made again, and made from safe and recycled or renewable inputs.

“Shifting towards a circular, regenerative economy for fashion we can help tackle the root causes of global challenges including pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss.”

Gucci unveils 2021 Gucci Equilibrium Impact Report

The news coincided with Gucci unveiling its 2021 Gucci Equilibrium Impact Report, which summarises the luxury brand’s commitments, progress and action taken to generate positive change for people and the planet while looking toward the future.

Bizzarri said that the second report was a testament to Gucci’s resolve “to continue building a responsible and sustainable business,” and showcases that the label has achieved tangible and measurable results, including reducing its total footprint, increasing employment diversity, and impacting positive social change through its Chime For Change and Gucci Changemakers programmes.

In his letter introducing the report, Bizzarri said: “As we celebrated our 100th anniversary, we also celebrated the continuation of our legacy to experiment and evolve for an ever-changing world. We looked to our past in order to define our future, which we now know is implicitly linked to the future of the planet that we call home.

“Over the last year, our commitments to building a responsible and sustainable business have been just as important as our creative identity. In fact, we see our creativity as our strongest tool for finding new solutions to move forward into a better future.”

Of the progress made by Gucci in 2021, Bizzarri said that he was “especially proud” of the progress on diversity and inclusivity, including gender equality and accessibility. The report notes that Gucci increased employee diversity in corporate and retail and that 58 percent of its female members were in management roles and 42 percent of female members in senior management roles.

“Diversity is an integral part of our culture; it drives creativity and we embrace everyone’s unique qualities,” added Bizzarri.

The report, utilising 2021 data and Gucci’s new Environmental Profit and Loss results, revealed that the fashion house had reduced its total footprint by 49 percent, covering greenhouse gas emissions, water use, air and water pollution, waste and land use. With its greenhouse gas emissions alone dropping by 46 percent since 2015 relative to growth. Gucci also attained 100 percent green energy in 44 of the 49 countries where its stores, corporate locations and factories are located.

Bizzarri also stated that part of Gucci’s vision for “responsible” luxury included transforming the supply chain to give back to nature, not just minimise their impact on it. To do this Gucci will continue to invest in regenerative agriculture, helping farmers transition to regenerative farming and support farming projects for regenerative wool, silk, cotton and linen.

“Regenerative agriculture is a lever for luxury and fashion to help reverse the trajectory of climate change and biodiversity loss, and our ambition is to source regenerative raw materials for our collections in order for us to continue to innovate in design and manufacturing,” explained Bizzarri.

Other nature-positive highlights included Gucci introducing its innovative animal-free material, Demetra, which combines quality, softness and durability with an eco-friendly ethos. The material was first used on three sneakers and has now been incorporated across its collections including Gucci Off The Grid, which now includes more than 70 products from shoes to accessories and luggage.

Gucci has also increased the traceability of its raw materials reaching 95 percent overall, with 99 percent traceability for its plant-based and animal-based materials. It has also recovered 290 tons of leftover leather, 215 tons of textile scraps, and 67 tons of metal accessories and donated 9,000 meters of fabric to NGOs in Italy through Gucci-Up.

The Italian fashion house also reduced its leather manufacturing footprint with Gucci Scrap-less, with 13 tanneries participating in the programme reducing 253 tons of leather scraps, saving 95 million litres of water, and avoiding 15,730 kilograms of waste production, and avoiding 1,085 tons of CO2.

ASEAN Chairmanship: Kadin will Present Seven Achievements

ASEAN Chairmanship

ASEAN Chairmanship

These programs are very important to become legacies introduced by Indonesia to the ASEAN.

Jakarta (ANTARA). The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), which chairs the 2023 ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC), will present seven past developments on five priority issues during Indonesia’s ASEAN Chairmanship this year.

The information was shared by Kadin Chairman and ASEAN-BAC 2023 Chairman Arsjad Rasjid at the press conference for the “ASEAN Chairmanship Transfer Ceremony” from Cambodia to Indonesia here on Monday.

Three of the seven legacies include digitization programs focused on fintech and e-commerce, namely ASEAN QR Code (Quick Response), ASEAN P2P (peer-to-peer) lending platform and WIKI Entrepreneurship.

Rasjid said that Kadin is working with all the central banks of the ASEAN countries to develop the QR code.

His party also said that WIKI Entrepreneurship will support international trade among Southeast Asian countries, especially for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).

In addition, other legacy ASEAN Net Zero Hub and Carbon Center of Excellence programs will be implemented to address environmental sustainability issues.

The ASEAN Net Zero Hub will help the private sector decarbonise and achieve net zero emissions targets at the ASEAN level.

In the meantime, the Carbon Center of Excellence is expected to act as a catalyst for global collaboration to achieve the zero emissions goal, as well as provide opportunities for commercial entities to harness the potential of carbon trading.

The ASEAN Chairman will also introduce the ASEAN One Shot campaign, which will prioritize the establishment of an ongoing regional vaccination program and the strengthening of manufacturing capacity and clinical research, which will be supported by digital infrastructure, by the health sector.

Efforts are aimed at increasing the resilience and preparedness of the regional health system for future pandemics.

This health program will be delivered through multiple collaborations between ASEAN governments, health industry players, and global health organizations.

In addition, a food security program for the agricultural sector with an inclusive circular system model will be implemented to encourage farmers and agricultural MSMEs in the region to become part of the global supply chain.

“These programs are very important in order to become a legacy represented by Indonesia to ASEAN Chairmanship. We have explained these programs to all members (ASEAN-DAK) and thank God they have all been accepted and can be a legacy that Indonesia brings to ASEAN,” added Rasjid.

Photo of a man posing with a Coca-Cola bottle in 1981 symbolized a cultural shift in China

Photo of a man posing with a Coca-Cola bottle in 1981 symbolized a cultural shift in China

Ayoung man stands grinning in Beijing’s Forbidden City. It’s the dead of winter, and one of his hands is buried deep into the pockets of his long overcoat to protect it from the chill. The other grasps the unmistakable contours of a glass Coca-Cola bottle.

Today, Coke is the world’s most famous soft drink and can be found just about anywhere. But back in 1981, when the image was shot by Pulitzer-Prize winning photographer Liu Heung Shing, it was only just getting into the hands of ordinary Chinese people.

Liu, who was in his late 20s when he began working for Time magazine in Beijing, felt the country was on the cusp of a great cultural shift following the death of Mao Zedong in 1976.

“The changes (at first) were subtle, and unless you lived there, you wouldn’t have noticed,” he recalled during an interview at his home in Hong Kong.

The ‘Blue Marble’: One of Earth’s most iconic images, 50 years on

He had earlier photographed people grieving for Mao along the banks of the Pearl River in Guangzhou. It was here that he was struck by how differently people carried themselves compared to what he had seen in late-1950s China, where he grew up during the disastrous Great Leap Forward campaign — a series of failed industrialization policies — before moving back to Hong Kong as a child.

Under Mao, the country went on to suffer from widespread famine and poverty, and the tumultuous years of the Cultural Revolution. But in the aftermath of the Chinese leader’s death, Liu said, “suddenly, people’s steps looked a little bit lighter, they dropped their shoulders and their faces looked more relaxed.”

It would prove to be a relatively liberal period in Chinese history — politically, economically and in terms of everyday life, which Liu captured in candid shots. One photo from the time showed a plastic surgeon and his client after a cosmetic procedure. Another depicted people gathering at a “Democracy Wall” in Beijing, where they wrote now-unthinkable criticisms of the government.

One of Liu’s most iconic images was captured on his way into the Time bureau after he had the strange feeling that something was “missing.” He turned his car around and, sure enough, a large portrait of Mao that had once hung prominently on a building had been freshly taken down. He quickly shot images of workers gathered around the depiction of the late Chairman, with some of their scaffolding visible in the frame.

This was China “moving out of the shadow of Mao,” he said.

‘It tastes so-so’

In December 1978, Coca-Cola became the first foreign enterprise permitted to enter the mainland Chinese market since the communist revolution. That same month, Beijing and Washington announced the normalization of Sino-American relations and Deng Xiaoping kick-started China’s transformative economic reforms with his “Open Door” policy. (Coca-Cola was first introduced to China in the 1920s but had been forced to leave in 1949, along with other foreign companies, by a government that regarded it as bourgeois).

Liu had photographed the opening of a joint-venture bottling plant in Beijing, capturing Coke chairman Roberto Goizueta and Chinese trade officials drinking Coca Cola and holding bottles aloft to cries of “ganbei” (cheers). He then thought to himself, “Now where do I find a (regular) Chinese person enjoying this (drink)?”

He headed to the Forbidden City, with its heavy flow of tourists, and soon found a man named Zhang Wei purchasing a Coke from a small stand.

“I remember he made a comment when he drank this syrupy Coke: ‘It tastes so-so'” said Liu, who ended up taking a few shots with one of the imperial palace’s picturesque pavilions in the background.

Forbidden City at 600: How China’s imperial palace survived against the odds

The response to Coke itself may have been underwhelming, but the snap perfectly captured the curiosity and openness many Chinese people felt at the time.

“As a photographer, I of course realized the significance. That this man, dressed in a ubiquitous PLA (People’s Liberation Army) coat, was one of the very first people to taste it,” he said, adding: “But I didn’t realize it would become part of the Chinese collective memory.”

The image would be widely published and displayed in the following years, and he later became friends with Zhang. In 1983, it appeared in Liu’s photography book “China after Mao,” a collection of images taken between 1976 and 1982. More recently he included it in his book “Liu Heung Shing: A Life in a Sea of Red.”

Striking photos document the collapse — and evolution — of 20th century communism

The photographer would go on to document other periods and profound events in the country’s modern history, including the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown. And just like those pictures of young student activists calling for democracy, Liu’s Coca-Cola photograph feels part of another era altogether.

With its apparent embrace of the new and the foreign — ideas encapsulated in that most American of drinks — the image stands in stark contrast to today’s China, where relations with the US are at an all-time low. Xi Jinping’s nationalist agenda has generated increasingly xenophobic attitudes towards the West.

“I realized that the story I did in the last quarter of the 20th century (would) continue to carry relevance into the 21st century,” Liu said.

“Especially with the story of China, I never doubt that these photographs are in the Chinese people’s collective memory.

“Even though this memory keeps being re-edited… the good thing about a photograph, is you cannot re-edit it. It becomes an image seared in people’s minds.”
