UK LAUNCHES SCHEME TO PAY HOMES TO CURB ELECTRICITY USE
Written by admin

On Friday, the UK’s National Grid launched a scheme to pay homeowners and businesses to reduce their electricity consumption when demand is high, to help prevent winter blackouts.

National Grid warned last month that the UK could face a forced power outage if it fails to import enough electricity and gas this winter and said it would launch the initiative as part of its efforts to prevent this.

“(The Plan) will help mitigate potential risks…and enable consumers to see the financial return on reducing peak-hour electricity consumption,” said Fintan Sly, CEO of the National Grid Electric System Operator.

Under the scheme, which will run until March 2023, registered households with smart meters will receive emails or text messages with time slots during which they will be able to pay themselves with money from their bills for reducing electricity consumption.

National Grid said households responding to the warnings could save up to £100 over the winter and businesses could save even more.
